What quality should you use?
For photographs, 75–85% is hard to tell apart on screen. The default of 92% is safe but saves less. Lower it step by step and watch the resulting size.
Why is PNG not offered here?
PNG is lossless, so there is no quality to set. To make a file smaller you have to save as JPG or WebP. At the same quality, WebP is the lighter of the two.
Does compressing twice save more?
A little, but each pass costs quality. Re-compressing an already compressed JPG stacks the losses and smears edges. Go back to the original and save once at the quality you want.
Where do the files go?
Nowhere. Your browser does the work, and this page never sends files to a server. Try it with your internet disconnected and see it still work.
