Which format should you pick?
JPG suits photographs. It drops detail your eye cannot easily catch and shrinks the file a lot. PNG suits screenshots, logos, and anything that needs a transparent background. WebP sits between them: lighter than JPG at the same quality and it keeps transparency, but older software may not open it.
Does JPG to PNG restore quality?
No. Whatever JPG threw away is gone, and PNG only stores the damaged image losslessly from there. The file gets several times bigger for nothing. Each result shows how much it grew, so you can see this for yourself.
So why convert to PNG at all?
Three good reasons: you want to add a transparent background, you plan to edit and re-save several times and want no further loss, or a service only accepts PNG. It will not look better, but it will not get worse either.
What happens to transparency?
PNG and WebP keep it. JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white.
Where do the files go?
