What is HEIC?
It is the format an iPhone saves photos in. At the same quality it is close to half the size of a JPG. The catch is that Windows and older software often cannot open it, which becomes a problem the moment you send the photo on.
I thought browsers could not open HEIC.
Chrome and Firefox cannot, which is true. This page fetches a decoder only in that case and unpacks the file in your browser. Safari reads HEIC natively, so it never downloads anything.
Does the photo lose quality?
Saving as JPG re-compresses it, so in theory yes. This tool encodes at 92% quality, which is hard to spot on screen. To avoid the loss entirely, pick PNG as the save format — the file gets much larger in exchange.
Can the iPhone shoot JPG instead?
It can. Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose "Most Compatible". That applies to new photos only, so the ones already on the phone still come here.
Where do the files go?
Nowhere. Your browser does the work, and this page never sends files to a server. Try it with your internet disconnected and see it still work.
