Which formats can go in?
Any format your browser can play. MP3, WAV, M4A and AAC open nearly everywhere, and OGG or FLAC often do as well.
Why can I not save as M4A?
Browsers can read M4A but cannot write one. Listing a format that does not work would only tell you after you clicked, so it is left out. Choose MP3 when compatibility matters and WAV when you want the sound untouched.
MP3 or WAV?
WAV is uncompressed, so the sound survives intact, but it runs about 10 MB a minute. MP3 is far smaller and compresses again to get there. Keep WAV for archiving and editing; send MP3 to people.
Does converting repeatedly hurt the sound?
Every trip through MP3 does. Re-encoding a file that is already MP3 stacks the losses. Going to WAV adds none of its own, but it cannot restore what earlier passes threw away.
Where do the files go?
Nowhere. Your browser does the work, and this page never sends files to a server. Try it with your internet disconnected and see it still work.
